Atlas shipped on October 21 last year billed as a free browser, free in the way casino parking is free: the download cost nothing, the only component that did any work sat behind ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, and the tier for anyone who wanted to run it from breakfast to bedtime was Pro at two hundred.

I wrote in July about OpenAI winding the browser down. I got the obituary right and the estate wrong. The product died. The price is still walking around.

Two hundred dollars is a fossil

Read it backwards. Perplexity puts Comet’s serious features up near $200. Anthropic parks Claude in Chrome behind Max, which runs $100 to $200. Genspark asks $249.99 at the top. Atlas slid into the same notch without anyone publishing a word about why.

None of those numbers were calculated. They were copied. In December 2024 OpenAI needed a tier for the people who’d run o1 until the wheels came off, somebody in a room said two hundred, and the whole category has been wearing that hand-me-down ever since, as if the figure had been carved somewhere rather than guessed on a Tuesday.

Your browser agent reads the tab you have open and then clicks things. The model call behind “add these fourteen people to the spreadsheet” is pocket change. You are buying a gift hamper in which the browser is the packing straw.

The second-browser tax

Every one of these products is a separate application, so the install is the cheap part and everything after it is a house move: you sign into all of it a second time, you rebuild the tab situation from memory, your extensions stay behind, your password manager either follows you or sulks, and the bookmark bar you’ve been grooming since 2019 arrives as a JSON file you will never import. Then the agent works beautifully. In the new house. Meanwhile the actual job stays in the old one, in Chrome, with eleven tabs and three admin panels you’ve been logged into since last Tuesday and a spreadsheet somebody shared with you at 11pm. Atlas had precisely this shape and that is precisely why Atlas is gone. Nobody moved. TechCrunch reported in July that OpenAI’s own reading was to reach into the browser people already use, which is a hell of a thing to concede when you are the one company on earth with enough gravity to make people switch browsers. The player who could most afford to be wrong about this changed its mind in public. Everyone else is still selling the fork in the road as though the fork were the feature.

$10

dassi is a Chrome extension. Side panel, your browser, the sessions you’re already signed into. Free credits for your first week, no card, no discovery call.

Then pick one

  1. Developer, $10 a month. Bring your own model: an API key from Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, a dozen others. Or sign in with the ChatGPT subscription already on your card and dassi runs GPT through it. Already paying OpenAI $20? A browser agent costs you ten more dollars, in Chrome, today.
  2. Starter, $25 a month. 5,000 credits included (2,500 plus a 2,500 bonus), no keys, no accounts anywhere else. The model dropdown doesn’t care who trained anything, so the month one lab gets cheaper you move, which is exactly the freedom a vendor-owned browser is built to take off you.
  3. Pro and Max sit above that, for the people whose actual job is running agents.

Four people, two Chromebooks

A small back office. Invoices, portals, a shared Gmail, and the cheap laptops that small businesses actually buy. Comet and Dia are desktop apps, so on the Chromebooks that quote is infinity. Claude in Chrome at Max rates is four seats at $100 to $200 apiece. dassi is $100 for four Starter seats with real credits behind them, or $40 if the office already pays OpenAI, and it goes onto every machine they own in about ninety seconds from the Chrome Web Store.

The spread widens with every hire. That’s what happens when a price is set against how much one power user will swallow instead of against the work.

Who should pay $200

If you already live inside ChatGPT Pro or Claude Max, the agent is in the box. Use it. You bought it.

Everyone else is being quoted research-lab rates for a form-filler and asked to emigrate in order to collect, in a category whose biggest name just conceded the emigration was the error.

Install dassi from the Chrome Web Store, sign in with the ChatGPT account you have, and run one task on the tab that’s open right now. You’ll know whether it earns the ten dollars before the week is out.
